‘Ridiculously immature’: Cambridge faces backlash over AI-based characters

By Justin Koehler

A new social media campaign for the City of Cambridge, centred around AI-based characters, is facing some pushback from the community.

The concerns were raised when the city posted an image of Ivan the Impatient to social media, a jacket-wearing AI-generated tiger.

The post reads, “Meet Ivan Impatient. It finished snowing 45 minutes ago, and he’s wondering why the plows STILL haven’t reached his street! According to Ivan, this is a regular winter. According to the snow and the weather reports… absolutely not,” before stating, “Don’t be like Ivan.”

“It’s the time of year where we’re looking to share some good humor some good nature,” said Alana Russell, Director of Communications with the city. “It’s a tongue-in-cheek campaign that’s not meant to offend, but only to share some good news stories in the end.”

The post continues to shine a light on the ongoing snow-clearing efforts and gives a shoutout to city staff and plow operators across Cambridge who have been working throughout the increased snowfall in recent weeks.

While the city intended to make a comedic twist of some of the comments it said it’s been receiving regularly this winter, reactions to the posts themselves have been filled with pushback from the community.

Those concerns stretch from the use of artificial intelligence rather than highlighting actual people in the community to concerns around the use of taxpayer dollars, and others plainly saying, “This is ridiculously immature” or “A city mocking its residents?? Wow.”

The city has since limited who is able to comment on those specific posts.

“It’s something creative that they had determined might be a fun way to capture attention,” said Russell. “Other than the image itself, this is all created in-house through our artistic designers.”

It comes as Cambridge has seen above-average amounts of snowfall through the winter months so far, noting it’s seen as much as three times the normal amount compared with the average January.

As a result, the city has had a tougher time clearing the snow accumulation, with lengthier snow events compared with other areas across Waterloo Region.

Following the reactions, the city put out a release to acknowledge the comments, saying, “These characters have captured the attention of residents and created feelings ranging from laughter and satisfaction to irritation and annoyance.”

It’s led the municipality to release a new character, Lenny Lend a Hand, looking to turn attention to more positive messaging through its new campaign.

“These posts have accomplished what any good marketing campaign should do – they have broken through the online noise in a time where the same old winter messaging has grown tired,” said Danielle Manton, General Manager of Corporate Services with the city. “Love them or hate them, these are the most common complaints the City receives, and they have set the stage for a reset.”

In a release, the city said, “Lenny’s superpower is positivity over negativity; he knows this winter has not been perfect, and he remembers the spirit of community is that we are in this together and everyone is doing the best they can.”

It has also kicked off The Lenny Awards, an effort where members of the community can be nominated for following the “spirit of Lenny” regarding the challenges of winter. Those nominees will be provided with a ticket for a prize draw.

“We appreciate that some of the tongue-in-cheek humour is not necessarily for everyone,” mentioned Russell. “But, we are pleased to see that this campaign is being met with a positive response.”

The city did state, though, that the other characters and Digital Villains will “continue to make cameo appearances” moving forward.
