She refers to it as “the Valley of Death.”
For several years, Shawna Percy-Jurchuck has been sounding the alarm about the intersection of Highway 6 and Wellington Road 22 in Guelph-Eramosa Township.
Also called the Cox Creek intersection, it is well-known by locals as being a dangerous area to pay extra attention to.
The intersection lies at the bottom of hills in each direction, which impedes sightlines, sometimes forcing drivers to make split-second decisions as vehicles wait to turn off the highway or get on from Wellington Road 22 and get up to speed.
Percy-Jurchuck created the Change.org petition after she and her family were involved in collision at the intersection on Dec. 18.

Her daughter, who was a novice driver, was behind the wheel at the time.
“I knew from experience going through what I call ‘The Valley of Death’, I knew that being in the left lane was not as safe as being on the right,” said Percy-Jurchuck. “So, as I was just telling her to move over to the right, we got t-boned.”
Percy-Jurchuck received a concussion and continues to suffer the effects. Her daughter and son were also injured.
Before the collision, Percy-Jurchuck had been advocating to local and provincial governments to make changes to improve safety. She said dealing with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has been frustrating because of what she believes has been a lack of response.
But that changed after Percy-Jurchuck emailed the agency following her collision. She got a phone call the next day.
“I’m encouraged that they are being more responsive now. I think that’s also the power of the petition, where it’s not just my voice but thousands of people saying the same thing, that we need interim safety measures here, which is great, but the communication is still lacking.”
It’s still not known how many collisions have been reported at the intersection, and no timeline has been published for permanent solutions.
Comments on the petition page mention drivers avoiding Highway 6 because of the Cox Creek intersection specifically. Others recount collisions and near misses over the years. It’s a well-known problem area.
“I drive through this intersection every day. Every time I do, I am met with anxiety and sadness when I think about how many people have lost their lives or have become injured/traumatized by the accidents that occur here. We are long overdue for change.”

The petition calls for a series of interim safety measures to be installed until work can get underway fixing the intersection. Things like flashing signs approaching the area. A lower speed limit through the valley and more speed enforcement from the OPP. Percy-Jurchuck mentioned specifically that the left turn lane on the highway southbound needs to be a dedicated turn lane, and she would like to see rumble strips installed on Wellington Road 22 to warn drivers of the intersection.
Percy-Jurchuck said she has been assured that a permanent fix is on the way, but that does little in the interim.
“There’s all sorts of things that can delay getting shovels in the ground so, even with best intentions, even if they have decided these are the best long-term infrastructure changes we can make for long-term safety, we still need safety there today.”
As of the publishing of this article, the petition To Make Hwy 6 & Wellington 22 Safe – Before Another Life is Lost, has garnered over 5,700 signatures.
In an email to 570 NewsRadio, the MTO said, “The Ministry of Transportation has completed the preliminary design phase and Class Environmental Assessment for improvements at this intersection. A roundabout was assessed as the preferred alternative.
Construction is anticipated to begin later this year. Property acquisition is currently underway, and utility relocations are expected to start in the coming months.
Installation of additional signage to increase driver awareness of the intersection is underway.
Pavement markings for the northbound and southbound left turn lanes will be installed and a speed study will be completed. “
