Should the iconic spiral parkade on Duke Street in downtown Kitchener be designated as a significant historical building?
Kitchener’s Heritage Committee has pushed through plans to give the parking garage a heritage designation, protecting is from demolition or repurposing for years to come.
The spiral concrete and lime green exterior catches the eye of most people who drive through downtown Kitchener, but some committee members were hesitant to call the building a piece of Kitchener’s heritage.
“The spiral is interesting, though I don’t know if I would want to see it encumber or inhibit any redevelopment at this site,” said committee member Grant Eveleigh.
However, the balance of the committee was in favour of protecting the parkade.
“It is heroic in its proportions, it is optimistic in its design, and I think it fully merits having the protection of a heritage designation,” said committee member Peter Ciuciura.
The committee ultimately pushed forward plans to designate the site as heritage along with six other properties, including the former Pine Grove schoolhouse near Sportsworld Drive.
