Guelph man refuses to pay $7,000 in sextortion scam

A young man refused to pay thousands of dollars in a sextortion scam, and went directly to Guelph Police instead.

They said the victim, in his 20s, contacted police on Thursday, after a relationship that began on a dating app went completely wrong.

Police said the victim and a woman soon moved to a chatting up, and had an intimate video chat.

But the woman abruptly ended that communication, and later told the victim she had recorded the whole thing.

Police said she sent the young man screenshots of his social media followers, and threatened to send the intimate video to those followers unless he paid her $7,000.

He paid nothing, and went straight to the police.

Investigators believe the suspect is in Asia.

Guelph Police spokesperson, Scott Tracey, told 570 NewsRadio it is very difficult to investigate a case like this, due to geography, and the anonymous nature of the crimes.

Tracey said Guelph Police try to be proactive instead, and warn the public not to fall for sextortion schemes.

Tracey said as of Friday, the intimate video had not been released publicly.
