CMH hoping to ease lot overcrowding by fitting in more parking spots

Finding a parking spot is never a fun task at the best of times, but when stopping for an appointment at local hospitals, including Cambridge Memorial (CMH), it can quickly become that much more frustrating.
That’s why CMH is looking to improve on its current parking situation, hoping to add more spaces, all without physically expanding its lots.
It comes as the local hospital has already acknowledged the growing problem, recommending on its website that “if you choose to park, give yourself an extra 20 plus minutes to ensure you have time to park and get to your appointment.”
It’s an issue that’s being seen at hospitals across the province, as well as locally across Waterloo Region.
CMH is hoping to achieve some parking relief through a request to the city that looks to reduce the size of its parking stall width. The application will be reviewed during a Cambridge committee of adjustment meeting.
A parking stall width is the set width that a parking spot can have, and currently, the city requires a width of 2.9 metres. The hospital is requesting that its number be reduced to 2.75 metres each.
It said that it would allow for the creation of upwards of 45 new parking spaces, increasing its total from 965 to 1,010 between two parking lots.
“The proposed minor variance would allow for the optimization of the existing lot layout, allowing for additional visitor parking as demand increases,” said CHM in its application to the Cambridge committee.
It will be brought forward to the committee on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
