If drivers rely on Highway 85 for their morning commute or regular drive, be prepared to hit some delays throughout the weekend.
The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has confirmed there will be a major highway closure through Kitchener this weekend as the Frederick Street Bridge is demolished.
Highway 85 is completely closed in both directions and won’t reopen until 6 p.m. The closure began on Saturday evening at 10 p.m.
The closure will impact northbound lanes at Ottawa Street, and southbound lanes will be shut down at Wellington Street.
The MTO says there will be no access to the highway from Ottawa Street, Wellington Street, Edna Street, or Bruce Street during the weekend closure.
Frederick Street has also been closed from Ann Street to Edna Street as of Monday, Dec. 1, as part of the project.
According to the MTO’s website, Frederick Street isn’t expected to reopen there until November 2026. The entire Frederick Bridge replacement project has a projected completion date of June 2027.
There have already been lane reductions on the highway due to the construction project, and more information can be found by clicking here.
All of the listed dates and times, including this weekend’s planned closure, are subject to change based on weather conditions.
