Five arrested, handguns seized during robbery at Cambridge mall

Five suspects, including three youths, are now in police custody after reports of a robbery in progress at the Cambridge Centre Mall, with more charges expected to be laid.

It was on Monday around 5:20 p.m. when police were called out to the mall by security. It’s alleged that those staff members spotted a stolen vehicle that had been linked to earlier robbery offences across Waterloo.

When police arrived at Cambridge Centre Mall, they found an alleged robbery in progress; five suspects with duffel bags were in the middle of holding up a jewellery store, said to be armed with handguns and sledgehammers.

Police said officers entered the mall and engaged the suspects “in the interest of public safety,” leading to the arrest of those five individuals.

Officials also seized two loaded 9mm handguns during the arrests.

All of the suspects are said to be males from Toronto, including two 15-year-olds, a 17-year-old, a 19-year-old and a 22-year-old. Those suspects were transported to the service’s Central Division, held for a bail hearing.

Those suspects all face charges of robbery with a firearm, though more charges are anticipated: police said these suspects are believed to have been involved in four other robbery and firearm-related offences across Waterloo earlier that same day, as well as similar offences in other jurisdictions. Those investigations are still ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Waterloo Regional Police at 519-570-9777.
