City of Waterloo opens temporary dog park

Great news for dog owners in Waterloo.

The city has announced the opening of a temporary leash-free dog park in Waterloo Park West.

The easiest way to get there is through the Westmount Road entrance.

This is being done as a stopgap measure while the city works through the process of building a permanent leash-free park in the city’s core.

In November 2024, city staff were directed by council to speed up the site selection processes, and Waterloo Park turned out to be the perfect spot for a temporary site with the grass already in place. This meant any construction required for the temporary site would be minimal.

“This temporary dog park adds new energy to Waterloo Park, giving residents and their dogs a place to connect, be active and enjoy the outdoors together,” Robin Milne, City of Waterloo, Director, Parks, Forestry and Cemeteries, said in a release. “While this park offers an immediate option, we will soon be engaging with the community as we plan for a permanent leash-free dog park in the city’s core.”

That engagement is scheduled to begin later this fall.

Funding for the construction of a permanent park is expected to be considered in 2027 capital budget talks.
