Escaped inmate from women’s prison in Kitchener recaptured: CSC

An inmate at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener who had escaped during the long weekend has been recaptured.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) says 59-year-old Carolyn Burden was arrested by Toronto Police Services on Monday. Burden was unaccounted for during the 11:30 a.m. count at the minimum security prison on Aug. 31.

Waterloo Regional Police confirmed that Burden was apprehended just before 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

CSC said in a statement that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the situation.

“Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system,” read the statement.

Burden is currently serving a sentence of five years for fraud over $5,000.
