One person is receiving treatment as a precaution after they were potentially exposed to a rabid bat in Centre Wellington.
Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph (WDG) Public Health announced on Wednesday that a bat tested positive for rabies on Aug. 12.
It’s the first confirmed case of a rabies-positive bat in that region in 2025.
Last week, two bats in Wellesley Township tested positive for rabies.
Health officials say bats are among the most common animals who get afflicted with rabies, along with skunks, raccoons, coyotes and foxes.
“Although rabies is rare, it can be fatal when left untreated,” said Dr. Matthew Tenenbaum, Associate Medical Officer of Health with WDG Public Health, in a release. “Anyone who has been bitten or scratched by an animal should wash the wound with soap and water for 15 minutes and seek immediate medical attention.”
Tips to protect yourself against rabies include avoiding contact with wildlife, supervising pets while they’re outside and ensure they’re vaccinated, and inform police or animal control if you suspect an animal is sick.
