Guelph store targeted again for Blue Jays merch

By Erin Anderson

There’s been another theft incident at a store in Guelph where Blue Jays merchandise was targeted.

On August 9, police were called to a business in the Stone Road and Scottsdale Drive area after a male suspect took approximately $1,600 worth of Jays items off the shelves and stuffed them into a duffel bag.

“The male proceeded to exit the business, making no attempts to pay for the items,” reads a release from the Guelph Police Service. “The male is described as mid-30s, approximately 5’9”, medium build, Middle Eastern descent, having a full sleeve tattoo on his left arm, dark brown hair, and full facial hair.”

The suspect fled in a four-door Toyota-style sedan, which was either dark brown or grey.

It follows a similar incident at the same store a month ago when a male suspect stole nearly $1,400 worth of Jays jerseys on July 9.

A spokesperson with Guelph police confirmed both thefts happened at the same store but could not say whether the incidents are believed to be related.

The suspect descriptions in each case are different, as the male in the first reported theft was described as being white with red hair and was dressed in a blue suit.

The investigations into both thefts remain ongoing.

As for why Jays gear is being targeted, police said it could be related to the team’s winning streak this summer and the fact that it’s baseball season, which could make the items easy to resell.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to contact Guelph police Constable Todd Van Iersel by phone at 519-824-1212 ext. 7557, or by email at tvaniersel@guelphpolice.ca.

Anonymous tips can be left with Crime Stoppers.
