It’s been a scorching summer across southern Ontario and that heat continues this weekend.

A heat warning was issued for much of southern Ontario beginning on Saturday.

The multi-day heat event is bringing daytime highs in the 30s and humidex values reaching up to 40.

The heat and humidity won’t let up much overnight, with lows of 23 to 19 C in the forecast.

Sunday’s high is 32 C with a humidex making it feel more like 40.

Slightly cooler conditions are expected to arrive by the middle of next week.

570 meteorologist Carl Lam said that wildfire smoke will not be a factor on Sunday.

“There wasn’t as much wildfire smoke to deal with on Saturday, and we will see that carryover effect on Sunday,” he said.

Until then, people are being warned to take precautions like limiting their time outdoors, staying hydrated, and checking in on vulnerable family, friends and neighbours.

Burn ban issued

A temporary fire ban is taking effect across the region.

As of 4:00 p.m. on Friday, backyard fires and open burns will not be allowed in Kitchener or Cambridge.

Waterloo already doesn’t allow backyard fires, and local townships have already issued a joint open-air burn ban.

Breaking the fire bans could result in fines and charges.

It’s because of the current dry conditions, with no rain in the forecast and minimal showers over the last several weeks. According to 570’s Weather Specialist Allister Aalders, the temperatures surpassed the 30 C mark 10 times throughout July, well above the 30-year average of four days. Additionally, last year, July only provided two days where the thermometer climbed above 30 C.
