As Remembrance Day approaches each year in Waterloo Region, the faces of local veterans are displayed on banners throughout several communities.
This includes in some areas of Cambridge (Galt, Preston), New Hamburg, Kitchener, Wellesley and Elmira.
And now, the City of Waterloo will do the same.
The city announced this week it is partnering with the Uptown Waterloo BIA and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 530 (Waterloo Legion) to mark the first year for the Veterans Banner Program.
Starting the first week of October through to November 11, the banners will be displayed along the Spurline Trail and throughout Uptown Waterloo.
“It is each of our responsibilities to ensure that those who have sacrificed have done so not in vain. These banners are a gentle reminder to those passing by that others have given so much for what we have today,” John Champion, veteran service officer at the Waterloo branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, said.
In total, 30 banners will be installed at a cost to the veterans’ families of $150 per banner. All installation costs will be covered by the city and the Uptown BIA.
The City of Waterloo Museum is lending a helping hand in covering the cost for 16 banners, with a focus on City of Waterloo veterans who served during WWI.
“These banners are more than just images. They are part of the City’s enduring tribute to our veterans,” Diane Freeman, Honourary Lieutenant Colonel 31 CER and City of Waterloo Ward 4 Councillor, said.
“As those who served our country age and pass on, we lose the opportunity to honour them in person in a ceremony. Programs like this will ensure that future generations will never forget the cost of freedom. By honouring their memory in this way, the courage, sacrifice and service of all Waterloo veterans will live on in our community.”
Those looking to participate in the program can contact John Champion, meinkosovo@hotmail.com, or phone the Waterloo Legion at 519-886-4790.
Banners are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
