Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) laid charges against a Kitchener teen after a local fireworks retailer was robbed, and a store employee was assaulted in the process.
Police said the General Investigations Unit have arrested a 17-year-old from Kitchener, who has now been charged with attempted theft under $5,000 following the fireworks theft on Monday evening.
Officers said it all happened Monday shortly after 7 p.m. when police received a disturbance call from a parking lot in the area of Ottawa Street South and Fischer-Hallman Road.
When they arrived on scene, police said they learned that several unknown teenagers entered the container, which was selling fireworks. The group allegedly stole merchandise from the vendor.
When confronted by a store employee, officers say “a disturbance occurred and the employee was assaulted.” The suspects were seen fleeing the parking lot in a vehicle.
No injuries were reported from the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing through regional police to find the remaining suspects.
WRPS is asking anyone with video footage or who saw the incident to reach out at 519-570-9777, extension 4497, or call Crime Stoppers.
