A Kitchener man is facing impaired driving charges after a crash just off the Hanlon in Guelph on Tuesday.
It was just before 3 a.m. on Tuesday when police in the Royal City responded to a reported crash at the intersection of Woodlawn Road West and the Hanlon Expressway, or Highway 6.
Early reports indicated a single driver from that two-vehicle crash was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The investigation into that collision brought serious delays to the area, with westbound lanes of Woodlawn Road West closed in Guelph around the Hanlon for several hours.
That investigation has since revealed that one of the involved motorists had just completed a left turn off the Hanlon onto Woodlawn Road West when his vehicle was struck from behind by another car.
Both involved vehicles were “destroyed” by the collision.
When the driver was struck, they contacted Guelph police and said that the other involved driver was unconscious.
Upon arrival, officers broke a window to gain entry to that second vehicle, and immediately were met with a “strong odour of alcohol.”
The unconscious man, identified as a 33-year-old from Kitchener, was removed from their vehicle, taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries and have since been released.
He since been charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving and failing to stop at a red light. The accused is set to appear in court on June 24.
