Awards, pancakes, and pomp are part of the celebration of the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market, which marked its 50th anniversary this year.
Thursday morning, pancakes and awards were handed out for a free celebration from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Those awards included recognition of the longest-standing family business and the longest-standing farmer.
And what is the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market without some apple fritters? The famous The Fritter Co. was awarded with the Entrepreneurial Spirit Award.
The beloved farmers’ market was established back in 1975, and welcomes more than one million shoppers every year.
“There was about a dozen original farmers that would come to the livestock exchange on this property back in 1975,” said Market General Manager, Joanna Loebach.

The market would eventually get its name in 1991.
“The market got its roots from the family members that didn’t participate in the livestock exchange, staying in the parking lot to exchange produce and other kinds of homemade goods,” she said.
The last 50 years have certainly come with major ups and downs for the market, including devastating fires in both 2013 and 2016.
Mark the calendars, summer Tuesday market days will be back this year starting Tuesday, June 18.
