Owner of missing cat a target of extortion in Guelph: Police

The owner of a missing cat in the Royal City needed help from police after an unknown man tried to extort them, claiming to be in possession of their lost pet.

According to Guelph Police, officers received a call from the south-end pet owner on Monday.

The Guelph man had reported his cat missing in January, putting posters up around his neighbourhood and on social media offering a reward for the cat’s return.

On Monday, the pet owner received a text from an unfamiliar number. The person on the other end of the line claimed to have the cat and demanded payment in exchange for a photo of the pet.

The pet owner wished to meet in person to pay the reward, but the unknown man told him he had given the cat away and stopped responding.

Guelph Police intervened and attempted to contact the unknown man, but the line they were using was out of service.

Police continue to investigate this incident.
