New changes coming to curbside collection across the region in 2026

The Region of Waterloo is changing the way garbage is picked up starting early next year.

Starting in March 2026, garbage pickup will change to a cart-based collection compared to manual pickup for garbage and organic pickup. The new system will have trucks with “arms” that will pick up the carts instead of having drivers manually lift bags. Similar cart programs have been used in municipalities such as Toronto and Guelph.

Olivia Kwok, Waterloo Region’s Manager of Collection and Diversion, said the changes will help ensure the health and safety of workers as well.

“It’s a very hard job right now when it’s manual when staff are lifting all that weight and throwing it into the trucks,” said Kwok. “We’re trying to make the job safer and also trying to build efficiencies and reliability in our service.”

The new cart system will feature two black carts for garbage: a large default cart and a smaller cart. The large cart can fit up to three standard garbage bags, and the small cart can fit one. The green bin will remain the same size.

The region will be offering small carts to residents in the summer, and they can apply for one. Carts are expected to be delivered to residential properties before the new service begins in March 2026.

“The Region provides curbside collection service to approximately 161,000 single-family homes, duplexes, and 3-to-6-unit buildings, as well as 8,500 multi-family units and townhouse complexes that meet truck-access criteria,” says the region’s website.
