Two more confirmed measles cases in Waterloo Region

Two more measles cases have been confirmed in Waterloo Region.

It comes after the first local case was reported on Friday.

The three cases are the first to be identified in the community since 2019. Health officials say they’re linked to the growing outbreak in southwestern Ontario.

Region of Waterloo Public Health has identified two places where people may have been exposed.

Both were Friday, March 21 in Waterloo:

  • Pharmasave Campus at 170 University Ave. W. between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Shoppers Drug Mart at 50 Weber St. N. between 12:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

“Measles is highly contagious and spreads easily among those who are unvaccinated,” Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, Waterloo Region’s Medical Officer of Health, previously said. “Vaccination remains the most effective way to limit the spread and protect yourself and your loved ones from serious illness.”

The majority of cases are still located in the Southwestern Public Health region, where almost half of the cases are reported, and neighbouring Grand Erie, which has almost 24 per cent.

Nine per cent of the province’s cases are now in Huron Perth, a region that includes Stratford and Goderich, rising from 3.7 per cent last week. Local public health officials have deemed it an area of concern.
