Significant rain expected this weekend, GRCA announces flood warning and flood watch

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A special weather statement and a flood watch and warning have been issued for St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Environment Canada says significant rainfall is expected Saturday evening through Sunday night.

There’s a potential for 20 to 40 mm of rain in Waterloo Region and the risk of thunderstorms. The weather agency notes that at times rain will be heavy.

The wet weather could result in pooling on roads and flooding in low-lying areas.

The conditions prompted the Grand River Conservation Authority to issue a flood watch and a flood warning for the entire Grand River watershed.

“High flows and unstable ice conditions will increase the safety risk around rivers and streams throughout the watershed,” read the flood watch message. Flood warnings have been issued for towns including New Hamburg, Drayton, West Montrose, Ayr, Six Nations, Brantford, Grand Valley and Waldemar.

The flood watch/warning will stay in effect until March 19th at 12 p.m.

Officials are telling people to use caution as the conditions develop.
