Sunwing resumed flights out of Toronto Pearson Airport on Friday following days of numerous cancellations that left hundreds of travellers stranded.
The departures page of Toronto Pearson’s website showed several on-time flights. Travel advisories were also no longer posted on Sunwing’s website.
Sunwing cancelled several flights from Pearson Airport on Wednesday and Thursday due to weather disruptions and “extremely limited” hotel capacity days after the Delta Air Lines plane crash, which injured 21 passengers.
Along with high winds, Toronto was also hit with over 60 centimetres of snow last weekend as city operations slowly returned to normal.
“Sunwing Airlines has been actively working to recover operations following the extreme weather events recently experienced in regions across Canada,” a spokesperson told CityNews on Friday. “These extreme weather disruptions severely limited our ability to reposition aircraft and crew to other airports to help alleviate the backlog in flights, and adversely limited our ability to reprotect passengers on alternate carriers given widespread flight cancellations which brought on additional operational complexities with regards to crew constraints and extremely limited hotel capacity.”
Sunwing offered full refunds within 21 business days for those whose vacations were cancelled. The airline is also working to reunite passengers with their bags as soon as possible.
“The safety and comfort of our customers remains our highest priority. Sunwing Airlines is focusing all available resources on safely returning our customers home from their destinations down south, including passengers on flight WG 733 whose northbound flight from Montego Bay to Toronto has been rescheduled to depart tomorrow, February 22,” the spokesperson explained.
“Our dedicated in-destination teams have worked diligently to source and provide accommodations, transfers, food and beverage for impacted customers, ensuring they are being taken care of to the best of our ability during this challenging time,” they added.
