City of Kitchener looking to improve firework safety through new survey

Municipalities in Waterloo Region are looking to improve fireworks usage and safety by letting the public have their say about new fireworks bylaws.

They’re a symbol of celebration, but unfortunately, in recent times, firework usage has been unsafe in Waterloo Region — they’ve even been weaponized.

On Victoria day last year, fireworks were shot at crowds of people, even set off under a baby stroller, leading to a large fight and pepper spray being deployed.

In that event, multiple people were charged, including a 37-year-old Kitchener man who shot a firework into the face of a Waterloo councillor.

On Diwali, police were called more than 360 times as fireworks were shot off in residential neighborhoods.

According to Waterloo Regional Police, there was only one call for service on Wednesday as some fireworks displays celebrated the Lunar New Year.

You can take the survey online to let them know what you would do and what you would like to see at www.engagewr.ca/fireworks/surveys/survey.
