Safety concerns are being raised after multiple reports of fireworks being set off on residential streets in Waterloo Region.
On Friday afternoon, Waterloo Regional Police shared a video of one incident from a Breslau neighbourhood that showed fireworks being lit in the middle of a road, with sparks flying around cars and homes.
In the video, multiple loud bangs from the fireworks can be heard followed by the sounds of children screaming and crying.
Police told CityNews Kitchener the video was recorded overnight and while there were no reported injuries, it raises obvious safety concerns.
Kitchener Councillor Jason Denault phoned The Mike Farwell Show on 570 NewsRadio on Friday and said it wasn’t just a problem in Breslau.
“Last night, I had some people down the street celebrating Diwali and setting off fireworks. My daughters came to me right before they go to bed and say ‘Dad, they’re setting fireworks off in the middle of the street’… I said no way,” explained Denault.
The councillor went outside to flag the issue with the individuals, who questioned where they’re allowed to lawfully light fireworks.
Denault said it’s clear that more public education is needed on fireworks safety, particularly from licensed sellers who distribute them.
Police are reminding everyone to adhere to fireworks bylaws and never set them off on residential roads or other unsafe locations.
