By Erin Anderson

New numbers are shining a light on a growth spurt for Waterloo Region and it’s not expected to slow down anytime soon.

The data from Statistics Canada shows the total population for the Region of Waterloo reached an estimate of 706,875 as of July 1, 2024.

It’s the first time the regional population has surpassed the 700,000 mark and the boost comes as officials prepare to reach one million residents by 2050.

The local population grew by just over 33,000 from 2023, when the tally sat at just under 674,000.

Kitchener saw the biggest jump with a growth rate of 6.4 per cent, making it the second fastest-growing municipality in Canada in 2024.

Surrey, B.C. held the top spot according to data compiled by economist Mike Moffatt.
