Kitchener fire displaces residents, sending smoke over Fairview Park Mall

A number of residents of a Kitchener townhouse complex are receiving support from the Red Cross, after a reported blaze on Sunday afternoon.

It was just around 12:45 p.m. when emergency crews responded to the area of Kingsway Drive for the fire.

The complex had to be evacuated while crews battled the blaze, with residents taking shelter in Grand River Transit buses to get out of the cold. Crews with the Kitchener Fire Department were able to quickly control and extinguish the fire.

A portion of Kingsway Drive was closed on Sunday for the emergency response.

The fire also grabbed the attention of those in the area of Fairview Park Mall, with a column of smoke visible from nearby Fairway Road.

The cause of the fire is said to still be under investigation.

No injuries have been reported.
