Extra charge for Guelph collision that killed a cyclist in her 70s

A Guelph man is facing an extra charge for a collision from about a month earlier that took the life of a senior.

Back in the early afternoon of Sept. 5, on Victoria Road North, a cyclist had been struck by a car near St. James Catholic High School, around Cassino Avenue.

Guelph Police say the woman in her 70s riding the bike died at a trauma centre in Hamilton the next day.

Police allege the driver fled the scene without checking on her well-being.

His car was found about an hour after the collision, and officers found the suspected driver less than two hours later at a different location.

The original charge laid against the 35-year-old was failing to remain at a collision causing bodily harm, which was soon upgraded to failing to remain at a collision causing death.

Officials said Tuesday, he’s facing a new charge under the Highway Traffic Act of operating an unsafe vehicle.

The accused man has a court date coming up on Oct. 18.
