Woman in her 70s is dead after being struck while riding her bike

A woman in Guelph has died after being struck by a vehicle while riding her bike on Thursday.

According to Guelph Police, officers were called to the area of Victoria Road North near St. James Catholic High School at around 1 p.m.

A woman in her 70s was riding southbound when she was hit by a Ford sedan.

The driver left the scene without checking on the elderly woman.

She was taken to a Hamilton hospital, but later died because of her injuries.

A 35-year-old Guelph man was found hours later and charged with failing to stop after an accident.

A portion of Victoria Road near the intersection of Cassino Avenue was closed for a number of hours.

Police are still investigating the incident, and are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or with dashcam footage of the area to contact them at 519-993-5499.
