Late night bus loop makes return to Waterloo

Good news for evening transit riders came this month as the “Late Night Loop” is running buses again in Waterloo.

Also known as Route 91, the line began running on Sept. 5 and will have buses every 30 minutes between Queen Station and the University of Waterloo station, with stops at Grand River Hospital, Uptown Waterloo, the University Of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and Central Station. The line runs every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from midnight to 2 a.m.

Waterloo Mayor Dorothy McCabe said the return of the route is really good news for the community.

“This is really a recognition that people that work late night shifts in the area, people who are out in the community…This is an opportunity for them to take the transit system home,” said McCabe.

Regional council voted back in April to bring back the route after hearing from over a dozen delegations, including students and workers. The line was discontinued during the pandemic because of a lack of passengers.

McCabe said regional council will be receiving an integrated mobility plan in the next few weeks and will weigh recommendations from staff to look at where transit is needed the most.
