Huether Hotel to be revitalized, Toronto-based firm partners with Adlys family

A Waterloo landmark is moving into the hands of a Toronto-based private equity real estate firm.

The firm, Establish Properties, plans to work with the Adlys family to revitalize the historic Huether Hotel. Harpinder Sandhu, co-founder of Establish Properties said they hope to honour the hotel’s “rich history” and continue to make a lasting impact on the Uptown Waterloo community.

“We wanna make sure we do this right, that’s why we’re not just coming in there and saying ‘ok, we’re going to do this or that” it’s really about our partnership with the Adlys family, and that was really important from the beginning.”

In a social media post, the firm added they hope to make the Waterloo landmark last “another 150 years.”

For now, those frequenting the Uptown area won’t notice many changes, as day to day operations at the hotel continue.

Employees at the hotel tell 570 NewsRadio, they were told there would be no changes for two years. Sandhu confirms there are still many discussions to be had with the current owners, and the City of Waterloo, adding there will “not be shovels in the ground for two years.”

As for what is planned for the historic landmark, Sandhu said a plan to bring in apartment units is in the works, as well as an entertainment hub on site.

“The rest of the property, actually stretches out across King Street there and then around the corner, so we’re imagining using all that area and redevelop it, and build up.”

The building itself though, is reportedly not going to be torn down. In fact, parts of the Huether are designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.
