The Working Centre to receive grant for new kitchen equipment

A provincial grant has been awarded to The Working Centre in Kitchener to help with a new St. John’s Kitchen.

The grant, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, will help the organization buy new kitchen equipment for an expanded kitchen project at their 97 Victoria St. N. location.

Joe Mancini, the director of The Working Centre, said the kitchen is an addition to a project to construct 44 units at that location.

“The Working Centre does produce 700 meals every day,” he said. “When we do get into the new St. John’s Kitchen, we’ll have a really nice kitchen; this is what that grant is providing us for.”

He adds construction at the site is about halfway completed. The floor needed to be ripped out for new plumbing to accommodate the 44 units and the new kitchen. A new floor is expected to be poured in around September and the project will be close to completion by June 2025.

“We have to build that building, but having the Trillium foundation supporting the actual kitchen equipment is really important and we are so glad for that,” said Mancini.

An official announcement will be made on Monday, alongside Kitchener Centre MPP Aislinn Clancy. A total amount for the grant has not been announced.
