Early start to corn season, thanks to unusual spring weather

By Erin Anderson

It’s a summertime staple for many backyard BBQs and it’s already here, ahead of schedule.

Anyone driving along Erbs Road in St. Agatha will notice a “beacon,” as a giant ear of corn is once again resting above the sign for Herrle’s Country Farm Market.

It signals the official start of sweet corn season.

“Everything’s been about 10 days to two weeks early this year,” said Trevor Herrle-Braun. “It’s caught a lot of people off guard with some things, but it also gets people quite excited with other things. Especially corn.”

Herrle-Braun said it’s already been quite busy, with many locals coming in to pick up Ontario corn and other produce.

“It’s funny how in our community, how word of mouth travels really quickly. It gets the word out for us, and the crowds come out.”

Farmers are crediting unusual spring weather for the early harvest.

“We had an usually warm and wet spring, which are really good conditions for growing,” said Herrle-Braun. “So we were able to get on the land a little bit earlier this year and get some seeds in the ground, and we didn’t have that frost in spring that we normally get that would deter a lot of things from growing quickly.”

He said they haven’t seen a weather pattern like it in 15 to 20 years.

Despite the head start, Herrle’s plans on having a supply of corn until at least Thanksgiving.
