Police seek suspect in assault with fireworks in Waterloo, two victims hurt

Police have sent out a photo of a suspect in two alleged attacks in Waterloo on Canada Day, at least one of which used fireworks as a weapon.

Waterloo Regional Police say it happened around 10:30 p.m., Monday, when the first victim was walking on Central Street.

Police say an unknown male suspect shot a firework and struck that victim.

A second victim was also physically assaulted by the same suspect.

Police said both victims sustained physical injuries, but don’t say how badly they were hurt.

The suspect walked off towards Albert Street.

Police have confirmed that this suspect is linked to the alleged assault of City of Waterloo Ward 7 Councillor, Julie Wright.

Wright went public with her story about being attacked with and hurt by a firework that someone shot at her face, as she was coming home from the Canada Day celebrations in Waterloo Park, Monday night.

She wrote in a social media post about that attack, “This firework insanity has to stop.”
