First 30-degree day in Waterloo Region could come as soon as next week

You may be missing the cool breeze of May, as Waterlooo Region heads into the summer months.

This Saturday, June 1, marks the meteorological start of summer, one that is predicted to be hot and humid.

CityNews 570’s Meteorologist Jill Taylor says despite a frost advisory on Friday morning, those 30-degree days are coming.

“I think we will get that coming up very soon, maybe even as early as next week. We’re looking at some hot, humid conditions, especially Tuesday and Wednesday, with a little bit of a cool down again. And with that instability comes the possibility of storms,” she said.

As of Friday, the forecast for Tuesday shows a chance of thunderstorms with a high of 27 C and a humidex of 32.

The start of June also marks the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, which is predicted to be active and more intense than in previous years.

“Of course we don’t get full-blown hurricanes here in southern Ontario, but we do get the remnants of hurricanes, as the leftovers pass over and sometimes they can be pretty intense, especially if they combine with an area of low pressure, so that is something that we will be keeping track of through the summer months.”

There have not yet been any 30-degree days recorded in Waterloo Region in 2024, though Jill says we did get close on Monday, May 20, reaching 29 C.
