An aid worker is facing criminal charges for the death of a woman at a supportive living residence in St. Marys.
Stratford police said the investigation began on the evening of March 11, with a sudden death in the town. They said a 40-year-old woman died in her residence operated by Community Living St. Mary’s and Area.
A support worker employed by that agency was arrested on April 1, the release reads, and charged with criminal negligence causing death, and fail to provide necessaries of life.
Stratford police, however, provided some extra information to 570 NewsRadio.
They confirmed they are not investigating any other deaths.
The woman who died was living with a severe disability requiring 24-hour care; she was not ill at the time of her death.
But police said they can not say more about the accused person “to protect the privacy of both the victim and accused and there is a strong likelihood that a publication ban will be put in place by the courts.”
Community Living St. Mary’s and Area has also sent a statement to 570 NewsRadio, confirming the accused is no longer with their organization.
The statement from their two co-executive directors went on to say:
“Upon learning of this incident, we took immediate steps to respond, including notifying the appropriate authorities and the family of the individual involved. We fully cooperated with the authorities as they investigated the matter. We promptly reviewed our organization’s protocols and procedures. We can confirm there is no ongoing risk to the health or well-being of the people our organization supports. We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and all those affected.”
