‘Grandparent’ scam leads to two arrests in Woolwich Township

A “grandparent” scam in Woolwich Township has led to the arrest of two 18-year-olds from the GTA.

Waterloo Regional Police arrived at a residence in the St. Jacobs area on Friday.

Grandparent scams target seniors, and usually involve a suspect imitating a relative of a senior asking for financial assistance.

When the victim described the situation to police, they noticed similarities to another investigation from earlier in the week – also in the same area.

Officers then found the suspect’s vehicle and made the arrest.

An 18-year-old from Toronto and an 18-year-old from Brampton were both charged with two counts of fraud under $5000.

The pair will appear in court in June.

WRPS’ Commercial Fraud Unit is continuing the investigation.
