11 hate-motivated incidents so far in 2024: WRPS

It’s been just over two weeks since we rang in the New Year and Waterloo Regional Police confirm that 11 hate-motivated occurrences have already been reported to their Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Unit so far in 2024.

A spokesperson with the Waterloo Regional Police Service said eight of the ‘occurrences’ have been investigated as criminal offences or hate-motivated crimes.

The other three occurrences were deemed ‘hate-motivated incidents’ and were non-criminal investigations.

The data was provided as police continue to search for a suspect in a hate-motivated assault in Uptown Waterloo over the weekend.

Last year, there were 277 hate-motivated crimes reported to police in Waterloo Region from Jan. 1 to Nov. 11.

For comparison, there were 190 reported hate-motivated crimes in all of 2022.
