Winter storm warning issued for Waterloo Region

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

With a winter storm approaching for most of southern Ontario, Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for Waterloo Region.

The storm is expected to hit Friday night and into Saturday. The weather agency reports that 10 to 25 cm of snowfall is possible.

CityNews meteorologist Jessie Uppal said snowfall will be heavy at times, between three to five centimetres an hour, and could lead to blowing snow and blizzard conditions.

“The major concern is snowfall combines with a very gusty wind, and that will allow for blowing snow, potentially blizzard like conditions, with extremely reduced visibility on the roads,” said Uppal.

Snowfall is expected to be heaviest on Friday night. Uppal said this could change to rain or a wintry mix after midnight as temperatures rise above the freezing mark.

Travel could be difficult during the storm with surfaces becoming icy and slippery.

Environment Canada is warning everyone to avoid travel if possible.

Following the storm, winds from western Canada will have temperatures plummet beginning on Sunday, making it feel like -17.
