Kitchener’s Loren Gabel will be starting the next chapter in her professional hockey career in a familiar spot.

Gabel was selected 22nd overall in the fourth round by Boston in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) Draft Monday afternoon.

She played for the Boston Pride in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) in the 2022-23 season.

Gabel is coming off an impressive year where she was honoured with Most Valuable Player of the PHF for her 2022-23 campaign. She amassed 20 goals, 20 assists for 40 points in 22 games played.

“I’m happy to be back in Boston,” said Gabel after being drafted. “Obviously after last season, I really enjoyed it and I couldn’t be happier.”

When asked what she is looking forward to most, Gabel said it’s going back to the fan base and the City of Boston.

“The city, the fan base, everything is super great.” she said. “Being with a new team, new coaching staff and everything, I’m super excited.”

Gabel said she is looking forward to being teammates with USA women’s hockey legend, Hilary Knight.

“There’s obviously well established athletes all across the board here. I’m super excited to be alongside her and she is a huge role model for this sport and I’m excited to be her teammate this year.”

The inaugural 2023-24 PWHL season is set to begin in January 2024.
