Case against accused UW stabber due back in court Friday

The case against the man accused of stabbing three people at the University of Waterloo (UW) in June is due back in a Kitchener courtroom tomorrow.

A bail hearing is on the docket for Friday morning.

Geovanny Villalba-Aleman, 24, is facing at least ten charges including multiple counts each of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He also faces one count of mischief under $5,000 which police have said is in relation to a torn Pride flag.

It’s that more minor charge, meantime, which also points to what is alleged to have stoked flames of hatred within the accused prior to the attack.

Regional police have said they believe the accused was motivated by hate related to gender expression and gender identity.

Both police and witnesses have also suggested the accused walked into the class at UW’s Hagey Hall on June 28, asked what it was about, and only then removed a pair of knives from a backpack and attacked.

The victims, a professor and two students, all suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
