Kitchener residents to weigh in on 55-storey tower proposal

By Brent Cater

Another tower to add to the long list of proposed developments in Waterloo Region.

A virtual meeting is being held Tuesday evening by the City of Kitchener to provide residents the opportunity to express their thoughts on the development.

The tower is proposed for downtown Kitchener at 417 King Street West, the site of the former Ziggy’s Cycle store which moved to a new location earlier this year.

In the planning documents. the tower will be 55-storeys tall, which if approved would mark one of the tallest buildings in Kitchener just shy of a 57-storey development on Borden Avenue South.

Other details from the documents say the mixed-use tower will contain just over 620 new units, both one and two bedroom, 184 new parking spaces and enough space for over 300 bicycle spaces.

Planning documents suggest one of the reasons this location is being considered is due to it’s close proximity to public transit.

Eight bus routes and one ION LRT station is located within 400 metres of the site.

In order to move forward the proposal requires a number of official plan and zoning bylaw amendments such as permission for the site to be used for multiple residential, restaurant and retail uses.

An online public information session will be held on Tuesday, July 11 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the details of which can be found on the City’s website.
