Lloyd Longfield, the Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Guelph, announced on Wednesday he will not be seeking re-election.
Longfield said he intends to stay on as MP until the next federal election is called.
“It has been the honour of my life to have served our community prior to and during my time as Guelph’s Member of Parliament,” said Longfield in a press release. “By the time of the next scheduled federal election, I will have been proud to serve as Guelph’s Member of Parliament for over 10 years.”
“I look forward to continuing to serve Guelph as the MP for the remainder of this term while working to ensure that Guelph is effectively represented in parliament in the future. I continue to be thankful for the privilege to represent Guelph as the MP and am even more grateful to my family for their continued support.”
Longfield cites his almost 10 years of service as the reason for his decision to not seek re-election. He is currently serving his third term as the MP of Guelph and will be 69 when he officially leaves office.
“I think it comes a time when you have to look in the mirror and say we’ve got to get somebody else in the job,” said Longfield in an interview with CityNews. “I think I’ve still got a couple of years left in my gas tank. I want to make those really strong years, but I also know it takes a while to get a new person put in place.”
Some of Longfield’s accomplishments include championing the disbursement of over $150 million in research funding at the University of Guelph, supporting individuals and businesses throughout the pandemic and recovery and advocating supportive housing projects such as Silver Maples Seniors Community, Grace Gardens, Kindle Communities and Wyndham House. One early accomplishment that stood out to the long time MP was the Syrian refugees coming to Guelph. He said the first family he met face to face was a “life changing” moment for him.
“The way that people come to Canada from terrible situations and then find a home here really has given me a different insight on what we take for granted,” he said.
Longfield was first elected in 2015 and is the 15th Member of Parliament for the riding of Guelph.
