Sawmill Road closes through Bloomingdale for ‘complete reconstruction’

You can expect a lengthy closure through the Bloomingdale area of Woolwich over the next few months – as the Region of Waterloo works to bring a new look to Sawmill Road.
Construction on Sawmill Road has begun to roll out in stages, with the first phase now underway and expected to extend through to November 2023.
With the first phase of construction underway as of Monday, Sawmill Road has been closed to through traffic from River Street through to just south of St. Charles Street West with only local access permitted.
Two-way traffic will still be maintained on Sawmill Road just north of St. Charles Street West – including traffic on St. Charles.
Motorists are encouraged to detour via St. Charles Street West to Shantz Station Road, over to Ebycrest and on to Victoria Street North.
The region does warn, however, that there could be periods during that construction work when traffic will need to travel on gravel surface – as well as times when flagging operations will be in place.
Businesses in the area will remain open and accessible during construction, and sidewalks will also be accessible.
Sawmill Road will reopen over the winter into 2024, with the next phase of construction set to kick off in spring of 2024 through to the early summer months.
According to the region, the multi-million dollar work will include a “complete road reconstruction”, bringing new concrete curbs and asphalt roadway surfacing – as well as road widening, on-road cycling lanes, new sidewalks on both side and traffic signals with a southbound turn-lane at Charles Street.
Infrastructure improvements on Sawmill also include drainage and storm sewer improvements along with storm water work.
The region has warned travelers to expect delays in the construction zone, and those moving through the construction zone are asked to follow and obey traffic signage for safety of workers.
