UW waives tuition costs for students from two First Nations Communities

By CityNews Staff

The University of Waterloo says it will now cover all tuition costs to qualifying students from two First Nations communities.

The University’s main campus sits on the Haldimand Tract.

Staring this September, this new initiative will cover current and incoming students who belong to Six Nations of the Grand River and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

The University says it will also offer Ontario domestic tuition rates for Indigenous students from elsewhere in Canada and the United States.

UW President and Vice-Chancellor, Vivek Goel says this is part of the university’s efforts toward indigenization, decolonization and reconciliation.

“We hope that by reducing financial barriers for these students we will encourage them to participate in our innovative academic, entrepreneurship and co-op programs, which increases their future opportunities while strengthening communities and economies.”

The tuition waiver is open to students in any faculty.

Details on how to apply can be found here.
