Facing down another potential wave of what's already been a long and gruelling pandemic and as sky-high inflation means monthly bills continue to grow — it can be a lot for some to handle mentally.
That said, help is available – and even more so locally now as KW Counselling is reopening its weekly walk-in after a more than two-year pandemic pause.
“There's just no replacement for it,” said Rebecca Webb, Executive Director, KW Counselling Services. “There is just something special about being seen in that way.”
The walk-in first got its start nearly 15-years ago as a way for those in urgent need to jump the queue, but those involved say they also quickly realized the pop-in sessions seemed to work better for some types of clients.
“For a lot of people it's still the model that works, it's what works best for them, for their lives, and we want to make sure that we can continue to honour that,” said Webb.
It's also no secret demand has only grown and wait lists grown longer through multiple years now of the COVID-19 pandemic and offering these same-day services again should help ensure those in immediate need can also access immediate help.
“You get to connect with a therapist that day and you get to talk through this is why I'm here today, this is the problem I'm facing, this is the challenge I'm having, and we work through a plan with you,” said Webb. “And you can always book a follow-up.”
That said, Webb is clear the services are set around an expectation that may be the only time that particular client walks through the door.
“So it's very solution focused, it's very meeting people where they are in that moment,” she said.
The clinic, meantime, runs Thursday afternoons from 2-6 p.m.
