Local female referee breaks barriers in OHL

By Karis Mapp

Including Friday's two exhibition games, Labour Day weekend will see 14 matchups within the Ontario Hockey League.

However, Saturday's game between the Guelph Storm and Mississauga Steelheads will be one for the record books.

Referee Hillary Brennan of London will skate alongside linesperson Marlowe Schott, who is from Elmira.

This will mark the first time in league history that two women have worked on the same officiating team.

Schott, who is 25 years-old, has officiated with the PWHL and the the men's Junior C and Juvenile hockey circuits.

Friday night's matchup between the same two teams also saw a woman referee for the first time in OHL history. Lacey Senuk, originally from Alberta, worked alongside fellow referee Michael Cairns to call the game.

Kirsten Welsh became the first women to officiate an OHL game in September 2021.
