Anti-abortion rally in Kitchener draws criticism from SHORE centre

By Luke Schulz

An anti-abortion rally held in Kitchener on Saturday has the region's sexual education and pregnancy support centre issuing a call for “loud and unwavering” support for abortion rights locally.

The event, hosted by the KW Right to Life Association on Lancaster Street West was advertised as being in promotion of the “sanctity of life from conception to natural death,” collecting funds through pledges for the distribution of anti-abortion signs. Those signs call for the overturning of R v Morgentaler, a landmark decision that saw the Supreme Court of Canada rule provisions in the Criminal Code against abortion to be unconstitutional as a violation of women's rights.

Posting on Twitter, the SHORE Centre encouraged residents in support of abortion rights to raise their voices, noting that those in support could not be “drowned out” by anti-abortion activism. The SHORE Centre has spoke up previously on educating residents to the “realities of abortion,” as earlier in March the group's Executive Director was vocal in opposing flyers distributed to doorsteps that allegedly spread misinformation about the procedure.

The SHORE Centre has since offered its supports to those who may be in need of further information or guidance.
