Man accused of setting fire during arrest at Kitchener residence

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A Kitchener man is facing a long list of charges after an investigation in the city.

On Tuesday morning, police were called to a residence in the area of Holborn Drive and Old Chicopee Drive.

Through investigation, police determined they had grounds to arrest a male inside the home.

As members of the Emergency Response Team attempted to make an arrest, the suspect allegedly became assaultive, setting a fire inside the home. The male was eventually arrested.

Four dogs and two cats were rescued, but one cat died as a result of the fire. The surviving animals were taken to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment.

A 38-year-old man faces charges, including assault with a weapon, arson, possession of incendiary material, cruelty to animals, killing or injuring animals and failing to comply with a judicial release (four counts).

The accused remains in custody.
