Waterloo Regional Police have laid 211 charges in the first week of Project Safe Semester.

Almost half, 96 in total, were laid under the Liquor Licence Act.

79 charges were also issued under the Highway Traffic Act. 22 people were arrested as well in the first three weeks of the campaign.

Since the beginning of September, police have responded to several large gatherings in the university district of Waterloo. They estimate one crowd at 2,500.

Waterloo Regional Police Chief Bryan Larkin issued a statement on Friday, calling the gatherings unacceptable and irresponsible.

Project Safe Semester, which kicked off August 24, is an annual campaign to promote the safety and well-being of university and college students.
