It's a tough pill to swallow for local hair salon owners — Waterloo Region will not be moving into step two of the province's reopening plan.
Glennys Shouldice, owner of Pure Hair Studio in Kitchener, said she is eager to reopen and is grateful that clients have been very supportive during the shutdown period.
“They're upset — they want to get their hair done. They feel for us because we've been closed for so long. They just don't understand.”
She said thanks to government subsidies, she has been able to continue paying her staff.
“It doesn't necessarily cover the whole payroll or rent subsidy. It doesn't cover the whole — just like maybe 75 per cent coverage. But of course, it's still there. But you're still out of pocket by some.”
She noted that residents who are thinking of driving to Guelph for a haircut appointment might be in for some disappointment.
“Yeah — we don't have room to take new clients right away, necessarily. You didn't have an appointment booked before we closed. We literally start at the beginning of the shutdown and start going through appointments to reschedule and those people get appointments first.
“So you wouldn't be able to just call us and say 'hey I need a haircut.'”
