Kitchener Public Library eliminating overdue fines

By Erin Anderson

It's good news from the Kitchener Public Library.

It has announced that it's removing overdue fines – permanently.

In a release, it said the goal is to make its services more equitable and accessible.

It doesn't mean residents can just take out a book and keep it forever. The library will continue to remind users about overdue items, and anything outstanding for a prolonged period of time will be billed.

The KPL isn't expecting longer wait times as a result; noting that many libraries have gone fine-free, and actually saw quicker returns of overdue materials.
